I Don’t Care

I don’t care. That seems like a very weird thing for a Massage Therapist to say, right? Let me explain.

Often, women come into my office apologizing before they even get in the door. “I’m such a mess”, “I didn’t have time to do my hair today”, “I just came from working out”. And then, when once on the table they start with “Oh, I forgot to shave my legs”, “My skin is so dry”, “I need a pedicure”.

I DON’T CARE. I don’t care about your hairy legs. Guess what? I probably have hairy legs, too. I don’t care if you are or aren’t wearing make-up. I don’t care if your heels are cracked or your knees are ashy. I don’t care about your scars, stretch marks, cellulite or freckles. I don’t care about the lines on your face. Not in the way you think, anyway.

Every single body is different. It’s truly amazing. Not just the shape, weight, size, hair color. But, the “lines of life”. Each scar holds a story, each line around your mouth has taken years of laughter to form. Each mark on your body is a tale waiting to be told, to be celebrated. You are here. You are in my space, in my hands. What an honor.

“Your face is marked with lines of life, put there by love and laughter, suffering and tears. It’s beautiful” -Lynsay Sands

Do you know what I do care about? YOU. That’s it. Plain and simple. I care about how you are feeling. I care if the table is warm and comfortable for you. I care about what is hurting you today. I care about YOU. Let it go. Drop the self-judgement. Just Be.

I don’t care.

Beautifully stated. I have made those exact same statements to massage therapists in the past. It’s refreshing and comforting to hear how the massage therapist is feeling. Thank you for sharing and remind me what’s really important.
